Important excerpts from books I’m reading:
Hi friend :3 I bought this book, A Monkey At The Window, a few years ago. It’s by Al-Saddiq Al-Raddi. a sudanese poet/author ☺️😍 I took snapshots of the entire introduction to this book – of this poetry collection :3 I thought the intro was really informative, esp. the parts on the stringent, fundamentalist regime that overtook Sudan after Al-Bashir took power in 1989. And how that government really suppressed a lot of literature, a lot of the arts, a lot of music, etc. poetry was also suppressed, of course. this had a really negative affect on many sudanese artists and writers, and musicians and poets, etc etc. Many went into exile, fled to other countries, and so on. The intro also talked about Al-Raddi’s complex style of poetry, and about the themes he often explores, in his work. I like how the writer of the intro mentioned some important aspects of Sudanese history, and the diversity of language and other parts of cultural identity, that is present in Sudan. And how this reality kinda runs counter to the efforts of Bashir’s regime to have Sudan be a solely Islamic and Arab nation. islam and Arabic are not superior to anything else any other religion, language, etc. and so I wholeheartedly agree that the efforts to highlight those aspects of sudanese identity (efforts made by the Bashir government) were unfounded and unwise – not smart at all. Sudanese identity I agree can be complex, can include different aspects ..African, Arab, Muslim, etc. And all the other different languages that are spoken, different ethnic groups, etc. But all that should be left to the people – the sudanese people – to negotiate, to reconcile among themselves. To own, and etc. The gov. shouldn’t impose its own cultural preferences onto the nation – that would be sorta dictatorial, and psychologically unhealthy, I feel. 😖 Ty**, 🧡🧡🧁 #sudan #poetry #literature #identity
